The Philippine Daily Inquirer on August 3, 2008, published two articles at “Talk of the Town” written by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, principal author of the proposed Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008. Lagman’s first article highlighted the main features of the measure, while his second noted the campaign to discredit it, both of which are at this blog for easy reference. On August 16, 2008 “Talk of the Town” published two articles, one Kit Tatad and another from Jo Imbong. Other contradictory responses coming from Fr. Virgilio Delfin, Pet Palma Dureza, Maria Concepcion S. Noche, Jose Fernandez and Minyong Ordoñez did not see print because of limited space.

The Bagman is a dyed-in-the-wool opponent of the RH Bill and believes that there is a need to consolidate the voice of those who oppose its legislation.

Follow the US Congress’ example and scrap the funds for contraceptive use before it’s too late.

Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Commission on Family and Life (CBCP-ECFL) made the appeal to the country’s lawmakers.

He said the country should avoid making the same mistake that the US made for funding contraception by rejecting the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

“We ask our government and our legislators, let us not follow their mistakes of the past, and then only to realize we have to correct it in the future,” Castro said in an article posted on the CBCP website.

“If the US Congress defunded such entity, we ask our Congress to reject the RH bill which has the same effect of allocating people’s money against what they believe in,” he added.

Castro said the country needs to do something now “before it’s too late for us to realize that the RH bill is wrong and spent millions of pesos for its implementation.”

On Saturday (Manila time), the US House voted a measure that would ensure no federal dollars fund abortions.

Voting 240-185, the Congressional body also cut off a federal family planning program that Plant Parenthood relies on for grants and contracts in taxpayer funding.

The amendment to the 2011 Federal Spending Bill, introduced by Rep. Mike Pence, will now go before the Senate.

In a statement, Pence described the vote as a “victory for taxpayers and a victory for life.”

“By banning federal funding to Planned Parenthood, Congress has taken a stand for millions of Americans who believe their tax dollars should not be used to subsidize the largest abortion provider in America,” Pence said.
